Work Life Balance

Birth rates have been on the decline and for the year 2009, it was lamented to be the lowest so far. Well, just why are the government incentives simply not working? Baby bonus payouts, increased maternity leave, even paternity leave, income tax reliefs. But they just do not seem to encourage Singaporeans to have more children.

At home...

As parents, we always want the best for our kids. We want to make sure that they receive the best that we can afford, for some, the best that they cant afford even. Regardless, children are precious. Having brought them to this world, we have the responsibility to provide for them. So that they will be able to provide for themselves in future.

At work...

As most of the workforce are employees, there are expectations from employers that we have to meet. After all, we have heard the policies of "Hire and Fire", "If you dont perform, you will be managed out", "nobody is indispensable", "work late or no work at all", "performance bonus", "6-Sigma", etc. This never ends. Every industry has their own yardsticks of employees' productivity and work performance. With the downturn that does not seem to be getting any better since the turn of the century till now - and this is a sentiment that many industries are recognising, regardless of how colourful the pictures are painted by the governments, business and financial news - quality of work performance determines job security. How can any employee not feel the compulsive need to do his day job well, perhaps at the sacrifice of family time?

On one hand, there is a call for better productivity. On the other hand, there is a call for increase in birth rates. In addition, there is a call for more mothers to carry on working after maternity leave. After all, the only resource in the country is the human resource.

It is kind of strange, has it occurred to anybody, that all these contravene each other? Well, I guess it is typical, I have always likened the government's strategy is this: catch a handful of darts and fling at the dartboard, hope for the best that at least one will hit the bull's eye. I will want to trust that somebody high up has done some scenario planning and understand what they are really doing. After all, we do have scholars in administrative roles don't we? So I guess the country's future is safe.
